Happy New Year 2016

2015 began like most other years, with goals and resolutions of self improvement, fitness plans, weight loss goals and financial organization. I can’t lie; those have topped most of my lists for the past 10 years, too. But undoubtedly the enthusiasm fizzled by January’s end. Anyone else experience that? I wanted to mix it up a bit, so last year, I felt led to take my writing to a different level and committed to 52 weeks of devotions here, and I did it! This is very possibly the first time EVER that I completed a yearlong goal! What began as a desire to overcome a character flaw, “lack of follow through,” ended up being a journey of learning and a great period of spiritual growth. You see, I typically write what I need to hear or what truths I need to be reminded of. The scriptures I shared here and deeper truths I discovered were driven home and absorbed deeper than ever before.
I have debated for the past few years about blogging and sharing on Facebook, because self promotion is not my gig. But after much prayer and listening to what I believe is a calling from God, I moved. I don’t desire accolades or even approval, because I already know perfect acceptance from a perfect God. I am His masterpiece, His workmanship and His daughter. I have all the approval I will ever need.  I do pray that He continues to use me to bless others with compassion, empathy, understanding and encouragement that come through my life experiences and His Word.
I look forward to continuing to write here, although it may be monthly or bimonthly. I will be working a little harder on my memoir ( the comedy, mystery, horror, love story that is my life!) , some topical teaching, and a brand new project that I am super excited to begin.
So here’s to 2016! Aspirations, dreams, resolutions and goals…I’ve got a few on my list, but number one will be that I seek God’s guidance in all I do and that I live my life as a witness to His Redeeming love.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away;behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17

May God bless you and your families in 2016!

Hope, love, joy and peace coalesce.
Hope, that because of a promised Savior coming to earth, a sinful world receives redemption.
Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand,
and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:2

Love is demonstrated as God sent His son as atonement for our sin.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him
should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Joy comes from knowing God and believing in His mighty saving power and grace,
which was poured out at the manger and at the cross.

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 1:8-9
Peace dwells in the hearts of those who are reconciled to God by way of Jesus Christ.
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1

May the hope, love, joy and peace of Jesus Christ fill your hearts and homes this day and all the days to come.
Have a blessed Christmas and Joyous New Year!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Peace- Oh Come Let Us Adore Him

The nativity set up from a 7 year old perspective is spot on. This photo was taken a few weeks ago after I asked Jayden to set up the children’s nativity. He’s been in charge of that task for the last few years. I allow the kids to move it around and play with it if they want. So this year, after I had begun to clean up and put away the empty boxes, I looked over to see this.  The shepherds and wise men were fully focused on Jesus, the newborn King. This was no longer something for us to look at and enjoy, but a vision of worship and adoration, just as it should be. This should be our perspective and purpose every day, to honor and worship the King who came into this world not to condemn it, but to save us! Praise be to God and to His Holy Son Jesus Christ! I love when my kids get it right!

This also served as a little reminder for me to keep my eyes on Jesus always, even through the jumble of emotions that accompany Christmas. As we enter the craziness of the Christmas holiday, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.Through mourning and longing, loneliness and grief, have peace knowing that Jesus is with You, and His Holy Spirit lives in You when you accept His free gift of grace. And through the family gatherings and children's tantrums, remember to pause and take in the peace He promises.
He is the way,the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Him. If you haven’t already, make this the day to accept Him as Savior and King and the forgiver of your sins. Walk with Him into eternity. God bless you with the Peace of Jesus Christ.

Joy

As we lit the 3rd candle on the Advent wreath this morning, we talked about Joy. Each of my 3 littles lit a candle and we reviewed the Hope and Love that we have in Jesus. And then, as we lit the pink candle, I reminded them of the Joy that we experience with Him as Lord of our lives. I explained the difference between happiness and joy by describing life as a roller coaster. The ups and downs of happy and sad versus the even keel, or level and smooth sailing that is joy. The joy of the Lord is the same in good and bad times, in happiness and in mourning. Joy is constant. Happiness comes and goes, is temporary and intense. Joy is even present in suffering. Happiness results in times of no conflict and no struggle and is dependent on circumstances. Joy is a result of dependence on almighty God.
Joy is knowing we are loved by God, knowing that He has our best interest in all He does in our lives, and that even in our darkest days, He is with us. It is more than a feeling. It is a condition; a benefit of accepting Jesus Christ
It was a good lesson for me to hear today, as I am tempted most when happiness is absent. Joy, though and the hope of heaven keep my focus on the prize. The joy of the Lord is my strength, it really is! When I remember that happiness is fleeting and that joy is eternal, I am content.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4
In the word of God, I find Joy. In the midst of conflict, joy prevails. And in my heart, joy resides.

May the Joy that is only found in the saving blood of Jesus Christ be yours today and always.

"Joy to the World, the Lord is come. Let earth receive her King! Let every heart prepare Him room!"

Advent-Love

LOVE! It makes the world go round! Love is bestowed upon us so generously from our Heavenly father. He wants us to receive it, to show our love to Him by worship and obedience, and to demonstrate it to others as commanded. If we truly apply this truth, all our relationships and faith issues improve, and so does our walk with God.

So how do we receive it? It will be the easiest thing you do today, if you haven’t already. It’s as simple as accepting a gift from a loved one. It is knowing that you did absolutely nothing to deserve such a lovely gift, but you are so thankful that your heart is full!

How do we show love back to God, the gift giver? Worship! Praise! Honor! This looks like obedience, but feels like love. God gave us guidelines to live by. The bible is so clear on so many daily issues we struggle with. We love Him back by doing His will, not ours.

Now, the loving others…that can be challenging on any given day! Who are these others or “neighbors” that Jesus refers to when He answers this question from the Pharisee in Matthew 22:36-40?

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Our neighbor is certainly not just the guy who resides beside us. Oh no, our neighbors are everywhere! Family members who we don’t see eye to eye with, spouses, ex-spouses, church members who worship differently, and yes our enemies are all our neighbors. OUCH! That last one gets me every time. What?! You have no enemies? Think about it. Who do we refuse to forgive? Who causes us anger and anxiety? Who interferes with our right relationship with almighty God? Those are our enemies. Love them. Pray for them. Pray to be able to extend to them the mercy that has been so generously given to us.

Out of gratitude to the one true God who sent His Son as a living sacrifice to atone for all our sins, past ,present and future, show love today to everyone you encounter. This is the love of Christmas!

I love you and God does, too!

Hope - Part 2

While the holidays are merry and bright for some, they are anything but for others. Whether you’ve lost a loved one to death, find yourself deployed or working far away from friends and family , or have gone through divorce, these can be some of the darkest days of your year. I know. I’ve been there. Where we once called “home” is no longer where we live. Family traditions are a thing of Christmas past. Holidays mean shared custody of your children, sometimes feeling like a tug of war. Quiet evenings alone with your thoughts of “what if?” and “why me?” and empty chairs around the dinner table replace a life once known. All of these changes harden our hearts and hope seems far away.

But friends, I’m here to tell you that there is hope. The same God who blessed you with the loved ones and relationships you mourn and the traditions you hold dear is with you still. He loves you the same today as yesterday, and He will be there for you tomorrow. God loves you so much that He sent His only son to die as a sacrifice to make your eternity with Him assured. If you were the only person on this earth, He would have died for you. If you were one of 100 who strayed, He would leave the 99 and come to find you. He seeks you and your whole heart. When you let Him in, the hope comes back. I promise and so does He.

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.  Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! Matthew 7:7-11

So, go ahead and be sad for a while. Own that pain, really feel it, and then lay it down. Place it along with all of your cares at the feet of Jesus. He will take the pain and replace it with a promise of hope.
Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favorite go to verses when I question why I am where I am in my life.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Rest on the promises of God, and know you are loved right where you are. No one can love you more completely than Jesus Christ. Find hope there and let yourself enjoy the life you are living. God bless you today and every day.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28
