Just say "No" to Multitasking

Multitasking. It’s going to kill me! And possibly seriously tick off my family. There are times when there is so much to do and so little time, that you must. But there are also times when we think we must, and we really don’t. Even the most organized person can be completely scattered in the midst of multi taking. Women, myself included, boast about how we are wired to multitask so much better than men. But, what is there to brag about?
When we are raising our kids, yes, it is obvious that we are doing fifty things at one time and most times, it is necessary for everyone’s health and well being. But when those days fade into the past, our minds still remain in high gear and trick us into believing we must do it all and the faster the better. I am blessed to be a stay at home mom, so my perspective will be different than some. But I still think this applies to all of us. We are not superheroes. We should not aspire to be. God created us in His image. He desires for us to have a heart for Him and to have a heart for His people. Rushing around day in and day out is not what he intended to be our norm. Society honors the multitasker, but look at the other behaviors the world glamorizes. They are not areas that bring honor to God or to our families.
Now that my rush of responsibilities has subsided, I am reflecting on what I can do differently when it happens again. Yes, I can go back to a previous post and remember to Pause, Pray, Praise and Have Peace. I can see it on my Facebook cover, for heaven’s sake! But implementing it EVERY day takes deliberate action. I feel somehow weak if I don’t finish something in record time. Pausing helps me to get my thoughts settled down and organized before I act. Praying puts my will in line with God’s. Praising gives me a grateful heart before I begin expecting anything. And Peace will follow when I am relying on God to guide me through my tasks. PHEW! At the end of the day, I am grateful for a God who enables me to multitask, but does not require me to do so. He wants me to take time to bask in His presence. It’s good for me and it’s good for you.  Everything else is just stuff.

Temporary busyness will steal our joy. Eternal investment pays a huge dividend! HEAVEN!

Heavenly Father, Thank you for reminding me to be still and know that you are God. You have all my stuff already in order, I just need to relax and accept it. Thank you that your mercies are new every day and every minute after a big fail. Teach us to walk in your ways and to stop running on our own. AMEN

Light of the World

Have you ever said something and immediately wanted to take it back?  No? Me neither! Ha, I wish!
So I’m driving, reflecting on our current state of affairs regarding his being locked out from his job, and I hear myself say to my husband. “Christmas is going to look a little different this year.” What did I just say?! Ok, so maybe because our financial situation is markedly different, our ritualistic gift buying and obnoxious spoiling of our kids will look different, but Christmas? Not even a chance. Christmas is an amazing season of awe and wonder. It’s a time of year when some who don’t know Jesus become curious, and some even go to church. I don’t doubt that many are saved because of it. But, Christmas in its stripped down original version is a combination of celebrating the Birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and a completely Pagan winter festival, with lots of other ethnic traditions thrown in just for fun. It is beautiful and magical on every level.
But the awe and wonder that should be the forefront is this: that God sent His only Son to earth to live among us and to die by our hand as atonement for our sins. He rose from the dead, giving us eternal life.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Romans 3:23-24

That is not magic, but the power of God. The fact that he is able to forgive our sinful nature and adopt us into His family is way bigger than magic. It is miraculous! No tree or decorations or pretty lights compare to the glory of His presence. So the way we celebrate this man made holiday will undoubtedly change based on our present situation (no pun intended!)However, the one true God we are celebrating does not change. He is solid, strong and mighty.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called.
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

The lights of the season pale in comparison to Light of the world. All the silver and gold, the tinsel and shine are nothing when held next to His heavenly glory.
So, go ahead and celebrate traditions with your family. But be careful not to allow the lines to blur. Jesus is holy and worthy of our praise daily. Christmas is a fun way to celebrate lots of things. But the way we do Christmas should never be in the same league as how we do God.
The bible warns of combining events like these. God knew that His message would become watered down as a result. As believers, we can revive the importance of God and of our need for a Savior to this fallen world. We need to be the salt and light, so that others don’t just get the diluted version of the Gospel. Be deliberate in all you do to show honor and glory to God.  God’s amazing grace covers us when we accept Jesus as our personal Savior, fully surrendering to Him our entire being. So, obviously your salvation is not compromised if you exchange gifts. But I believe we should never let our guard down. Satan uses Christmas to win people to himself by feeding our insatiable need for more stuff; idolatry at its finest. Resist the temptation, and accept that Jesus is all you need.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
May God bless us all as we enter the “holiday” months.

We ask, Father, that you give us hearts of gratitude and mouths of praise for you are Holy and worthy. Amen

Good News/Bad News

9/29/2015

e"I've got good news and bad news." Don't you just hate to hear that?!
                                                      YAY!!!     oh, bummer....
What if I told you that some people who hear the good news of Jesus Christ actually think it's the bad news? When most of us hear the Good News, we are saying "YAY, that's GREAT news!" and we cannot wait to share it. But sometimes when someone hears this message for the first time, even if they were raised "in church," it can sound like anything but good.

We all get mixed messages from media, from family and from friends regarding death, heaven and hell. I grew up most of my life believing in God, believing that Jesus was crucified, died and was resurrected, but also believing that if I was a generally good girl, I would go to heaven. I could see my dad and grandparents and meet the big guy with the flowing robes and long white beard. (God, not the winter warlock!)

Daily decisions, activities and habits are much less stressful and require less discernment when we adopt the "I'm basically a good person" , "I didn't kill anyone" theology. Forging our own path with our own desires and visions usually starts out amazingly well, but without God directing our journey, we fall victim to worldly selfishness. While we may gain wealth here, we do not secure a heavenly future.
So, here is a condensed version of the Good News....
God created man. Man sinned against God. God required sacrifices be made at an altar to appease Him so that they were forgiven. The Old Testament spoke of a Savior, one who would be the ultimate and final sacrifice, who would save his people. God sent Him, Jesus Christ, to walk among us, to die a painful death by crucifixion, and to be resurrected. It was all God's plan to save us. It IS good news. He loves us that much!

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

So when you hear this good news and it sounds like judgmental bad news, I pray that these truths will change your mind....

1-God takes us as we are, where we are. We don't need to clean up and make ourselves presentable first. He does that. We just say yes to His invitation.
2-We are all dying, not passing away. DYING! It is unpleasant but you can't sugar coat it. So, making a decision to follow Jesus and have a heavenly eternity, for me is just about the only thing going. It's just smart!
3-We have hope in Jesus and can take that hope to others. We've all been broken and damaged, but Jesus is the great physician. Let Him heal you and then offer that same hope to everyone you meet.
4- We all have a God shaped hole in our hearts. As soon as we put Him in the center of EVERYTHING, where he belongs, life becomes worth living. Not easy, but worth it.

Father, I pray that whoever stumbles across this post today is compelled to call out to you, to ask you into their heart and to become a follower of Jesus Christ. Father, fill them with your Holy Spirit and guide them to a Bible believing church.Thank you for the gift of life, now and forever. AMEN

Let it Go

In studying the two great commandments that God has clearly given us in Matthew 22:36-40, I am convicted to address the areas of unforgiveness in my life.(AGAIN!) How can I love someone when I hang on to rage and resentment?  I am sure I have written about this before but, this is a recurring stumbling block for me in my Christian walk.  Bitterness and grudges have no place in a person’s life. Harboring animosity toward another stands to eclipse the light of Jesus. Our goal should be to let our light shine, His light. Feelings like resentment and anger prevent others from seeing His radiance in us. So what do we do?

Forgiving someone does not mean you must return to the same relationship with them. In fact, in some cases it would be a bad idea. It simply means that you recognize we are all sinners, and we are all broken in one way or another. Forgiving someone requires a humble and gracious attitude. Forgiveness frees us to love the person in a different capacity, a love that may involve prayer and empathy instead of daily interaction. The chains of unforgiveness are heavy and serve no purpose. With prayer and acknowledgement of our own sinful nature we can break the chains. Allow God to work in the other person’s life. Lose the desire to prove that you are right, they were wrong, and that your anger is justified. You may be right. You may have been deeply hurt and damaged by another. But the sooner you run to Jesus for validation instead of winning in your own mind, the faster you will regain peace.

God tells us in Colossians 3:13 that we must forgive if we are to be forgiven. We somehow feel entitled to hold on to grudges, but when we really know Jesus, the path to forgiveness is pretty smooth and straightforward. He makes a way for us to be freed from the bondage of unforgiveness. He promises an eternity with him in heaven when we do not deserve it. How much less have others sinned against us and yet we hang on. Jesus paid it all. That means He died for their sins, too. So when they repent, they are just like us. No worse and no better a Christian. And of course their repentance is not something we can accomplish. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to prompt a person to come to Christ. We can only plant the seeds and pray. How many seeds are we planting while we hang out in the mire of unforgiveness? Not many.

Do yourself a favor and let it go. Release that hold you have, send the burden on its way and be free.

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:12-17

I will be heeding my own advice today ;).

Thank you Jesus, that while I was still a sinner, you died for me. Help me to give grace to those who have wronged me and to love them as you love me. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN
